Surf's Up 2009 was a success!
A bid of $4,950 for Cheryl Kotteras’ Pina Coloda Paradise Cake set a new record at “Surf’s Up, School’s Out,” the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation’s annual spring fundraising dinner/dance/party. The high bid was a group effort with Velasquez Elementary getting the cake!
The dessert auction, orchestrated by auctioneer extraordinaire Jeff Council, raised $43,750, also setting a new record. Last year’s dessert auction brought in $37,000.
This year’s extravaganza, sponsored byOakBend Medical Center, earned a total $67,000 for L.E.A.F., also a new record. The total take for Surf’s Up in 2008 was $54,600.
"This event is becoming known as the best fund raiser in Fort Bend county,” said L.E.A.F. president Lonnie Meadows. “More than 1,000 people enjoyed a good meal and dancing to the Triumphs and we raised a lot of money to underwrite teacher grants for this fall! Thanks again to OakBend Medical for their support in underwriting Surf’s Up.”
"OakBend Medical Center is delighted to be a community partner with the Lamar Education Awards Foundation,” said Joe Freudenberger, CEO of OakBend. “Surf's Up is a great event, a lot of fun and a pleasure to sponsor."
